Nature, Movement & Wellbeing

Taking care of your mental health doesn't always happen in a counselling office. Sometimes, it begins with a walk outside, a conversation with a new friend, or simply spending time in nature.

Research has shown that regular physical activity, time spent outdoors, and meaningful social connection can all have a positive impact on mental health. Even light movement—such as walking or hiking—can help reduce stress, improve mood, boost energy, and support overall well-being. Spending time in nature has also been linked to lower stress levels, improved focus, and a greater sense of calm, while connecting with others can help reduce feelings of loneliness and strengthen our sense of belonging.

At Lake Country Health, we believe that caring for your mental health can look different for everyone. That's why our seasonal outdoor programs provide welcoming spaces where participants can enjoy the benefits of movement, nature, and community in a way that feels comfortable and accessible.

What you can Expect

Our outdoor programs are designed to provide a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where you can:

  • Enjoy light to moderate physical activity at a comfortable pace.

  • Spend time outdoors and experience the benefits of nature.

  • Meet new people and build meaningful community connections.

  • Share conversations about everyday life, or about mental health, if and when you choose.

There is no expectation or pressure to talk about your mental health. Some participants simply enjoy the walk, fresh air, and company of others, while others find that conversations happen naturally over time. Whether you come to socialize, move your body, spend time outdoors, or seek support, you are welcome exactly as you are.

Walk and Talk

About: Our Weekly Walk & Talk Group offers a relaxed and welcoming opportunity to enjoy light physical activity while connecting with others in the community. Through casual group walks in a supportive environment, you can experience the mental and physical benefits of spending time outdoors, meeting new people, and building meaningful connections.

When: Weekly on Wednesdays from 9:00-10:00am

Accessibility:

  • The walk begins at Swalwell Park and follows a loop that includes part of the Rail Trail.

  • The route is generally flat and easy, except for one small hill when accessing the Rail Trail. While the route is manageable for many people, it is not fully accessible for all mobility levels.

  • Public washrooms are available at Swalwell Park. However, there is no washroom access throughout the remainder of the walking route.

Registration: Anyone interested in joining the group, please e-mail Clara Cookson at mental-health@lakecountryhealth.ca

Tranquil Trail Hiking

About: Tranquil Trails is a seasonal guided hiking program that brings people together to experience the benefits of nature, movement, and community. Through shared time on local trails, you are encouraged to slow down, enjoy the outdoors, and support their mental and emotional well-being in a welcoming and inclusive environment.

Our hikes are generally designed to provide light to moderate physical activity and are suitable for a variety of fitness levels. While each hike is selected with accessibility in mind, trail difficulty and terrain may vary. Details about the route, distance, and expected difficulty will be shared in advance so you can choose hikes that best suit your comfort level and experience.

When: Bi-weekly on Mondays from 9:00 - 10:00/10:30am approximately (dependent on hiking route)

Registration:  Anyone interested in joining the group, please e-mail Clara Cookson at mental-health@lakecountryhealth.ca
